For over a century the Camarena family has been cultivating blue agave for tequila in Arandas, Mexico. Arandas has become the current epicenter of highland tequila production with some of the world’s highest agave fields, some at over 7,700 feet. The Camarena family raises over 3 million agave plants in what is know as the Los Altos Highlands. This region of Jalisco is renowned for its mineral-rich volcanic soil as well as temperate climate, making it the premier tequila-producing region in Mexico.

It is from these agave fields that the Camarena family has been harvesting blue agave for their new Familia Camarena Tequila, now available in the United States in either a silver or reposado. Respected master distiller Miguel Cedeno Cruz has brought his traditional, hands-on methods of preparing, fermenting and distilling premium tequila to the Camarena operation. The result is 100% blue agave tequila that is sweet and fragrant yet finishes strong.

A few key points in the making of Familia Camarena Tequila:
• Slow-roasted in volcanic ovens
• Chemical-free milling
• Closely supervised fermentation
• Small-batch pot still distillation

On top of that the Camarena family even bottles, labels and inspects every bottle by hand. That is a serious amount of work, just like my friends at Stranahan’s do it! This tequila is just making its way into the U.S. and may take a while to reach your market. But, it is sure to be one worth the wait.
