Veggie Burger

Though it might seem like it in certain neighborhoods, there aren’t THAT many vegetarians in the United States. According to one recent survey, just four percent of the population reports that they never eat meat. However, a growing number of Americans (40 percent, last checked by the Vegetarian Research Group) say that when eating out they often order dishes without any meat. That’s a lot of Americans! About 125 million according to a combination of the US Census Bureau and my rudimentary math skills. What are these people eating? Leaves? Probably some of them. But increasingly, the once-maligned veggie burger is gaining respect even among the meat-eating population. The New York Times even says so (so it must be true).

And that is why, using a top secret (but I assure you very scientific) methodology, we here at the have compiled our list of the Top Three Veggie Burgers IN THE WORLD. I hope that you find them as inspiring as I do.

Number Three: Washington DC’s Luna Grill has a very tasty veggie burger that holds its own without too many fancy trappings: just lettuce, tomato and onion on a kaiser roll. What makes this one of the best veggie burgers is the enticing combination of textures: a soft, chewy interior surrounded by a nice, crispy crust. Very pleasant indeed.

Number Two: The number two spot goes to New York’s 5 Napkin Burger. It was recently named by the Village Voice as the best veggie burger in New York and I cannot disagree. Also crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, it trumps Luna Grill with its specialty 5N sauce, described in the Village Voice as a “hybrid of Russian dressing and tartar sauce,” which, rest assured, is delicious.

Number One: What beats Russian dressing and tartar sauce? Not much. But, in the type of upset with which NYC should now be familiar, the best veggie burger in the world award goes to Boston’s Audubon Circle Restaurant and Bar. It’s a three bean burger made in-house and served with mouth-watering chili mayo and roasted potatoes (not to be confused with french fries) on the side. It’s incredibly yummy and does NOT compromise its integrity by selling cologne for extra cash.

There you have it! The scientifically-selected list of the best veggie burgers in the galaxy. If you would like to nominate another veggie burger that we have overlooked, let us know! And if you aren’t a veggie burger fan, check out the latest news on gourmet burgers (which are nice and meaty).

Lastly, a disclaimer for the Yankees’ fans out there: firstly I’m really sorry about that Blue Jays series (ouch) and also please note that the opinions expressed on this blog post do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the other nice folks that work at FSW. (But they should.)
